Metallic embroidery and body enhancing designs, such as a matador's bolero jacket and the flamenco dancer's slim, ruffled dress, abound. Spanish clothing has always been structured, with the belled farthingale a popular export in the 16th and 17th centuries. According to Kwintessential, the Spanish love of tried and true designs caused much of the fashion industry to move on to more courageous pastures. It notes that "Spain refused to develop or change its fashion sense and continued to use these styles well after they were outdated; this was the main cause for Spain to give up its title as center of European fashion to places like Paris." These days, Spanish citizenss have access to flattering, fashionable apparel that preserves the budget while enhancing style. Alexandra Moore, of the Barcelona Tourist Guide, says, "The Spanish really care about their personal appearance and image; they don't really wear casual clothes as we know it. The Catalans, especially, are very proud people and like to look good." Fitted clothing is common, as are muted, earthy tones. Sophisticated, well coordinated outfits are key. Spaniards don't just wear clothes to avoid nudity they create a look that is an integral part of their identity as an attractive people. The Spanish favor what's comfortable yet fashionable, yet it is easy to see they are cognizant of style. For instance, their shoes are typically well made and complimentary, with sports sneakers taking a backseat to designer style footwear. Ugly or cheap shoes will ruin an outfit, so tread carefully. For women, it's considered too flashy to wear a miniskirt and camisole top or very tight clothing. Like many of Europe's cosmopolitan centers, makeup and nail polish usually are light, if present at all. Period. Remember my post discussing the underpinnings of today's market turmoil? Investors everywhere are on edge. Debt. Equity. Structured products. It doesn't matter. There is no place to hide. The VIX has skyrocketed, and one need not be a market technician to both see and feel the intra day volatility taking place. One can say that the market is overreacting on both the upside and the downside, but I think it is important to take a step back and ask why? I have written a lot lately about the importance of good financial disclosures as a vehicle for building investor confidence and stabilizing the markets, but I think even I may have understated the magnitude of its impact. If investors are waiting for the other shoe to drop, waiting for that next unexpected write off, that next accounting scandal, what do you think happens when even a whiff of such an event gets leaked into the market? Investors react quickly and violently, especially in the face of imperfect information. This is a major source of volatility at a time when information is extremely imperfect one might even say crappy and is further leveraged by a growing interdependence among companies, countries and markets. An article in yesterday's MarketWatch discussed the possibility of financial institutions marking everything to market and getting all the bad news out at once, in an effort to rebuild confidence in their financial disclosures and prospects. Dramatic, yes, but provocative and worthy of discussion: A couple of analysts I spoke to said that the best thing financial firms can do to rebuild confidence is to look at every asset on the balance sheet and mark it to market. If it can't be sold or if its value is unclear, it should be written off. That write off should be a one time event. "They need to be as straightforward as possible about what their credit risks are," O'Shaughnessy (Patrick, analyst at Morningstar) said. "What's really killing them and killing investors is the uncertainty that surrounds it. Nobody's sure if the write down is going to be $500 million to $1 billion or more." O'Shaughnessy doesn't recommend that everything be written to zero, but underestimating risk is what initially got these firms in a bind. Erring by being overly conservative may cause some short term anguish with investors, who could see some eye popping numbers. For instance, what if the $45 billion in total write downs is only half, or a quarter, of the final amount, as Deutsche Bank analyst Michael Mayo suggested Monday? But a tough line on marking to market would lessen the likelihood of dragging down the industry and the economy this winter, and it leaves open the possibility that the market may revive and those securities might actually produce a dividend down the road. Blythe Masters, a long time credit derivatives pro at JP Morgan (NYSE:JPM) and now global head of currencies and commodities, had some interesting advice for her Wall Street peers: "We need to raise the game and acknowledge our weaknesses," Masters told attendees of the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association's annual meeting, adding that in the credit crunch, "we are experiencing a crisis of unprecedented proportions" that will "damage the economy." Geez, Blythe is starting to sound like me. This is good for the industry if her words are heeded. Corporations and managements everywhere have an aversion to pain, and this aversion is an adaptive response if, say, you are running from a predator. Unfortunately, this hard wired dislike of facing into ugliness is something that causes crises to drag on for way, way too long, and we run the risk of having this exact thing happen if managements and their Boards don't have a come to Jesus moment and soon. Perverse effects can be caused when several quant funds, which tend to use similar models, pile in and out of the same stock at once. Last week's sudden fall in tech stocks, which had strongly outperformed the market, certainly had that look about it. Intraday trading patterns also had a crazy look. No news, or sudden change of Mr Market's heart, lay behind the 1.8 per cent fall of the S 500 in the last 38 minutes of trading on Friday, according to Bloomberg data. More likely, the move was dictated by shifts in the trading books of quant funds. I see what John is saying, and believe me, few people have a greater appreciation for the impact of stat arb funds than myself. That said, based on anecdotal evidence of investors with whom I've spoken coupled with the intuition of market psychology and trading in an information vacuum that I've explained above, I think John's argument tells only part of the story. It may well be that quants are having the effect of increasing the amplitude of the waves due to crowded trades, but I believe the trend ball is getting rolled more by market psychology than automated trading. Now if investors had the confidence that what was coming out of corporate PR departments was the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth (and not until the next time they release a new version of the truth), I believe the amplitude of the ups and downs we've witnessed would be muted. Why? Because trading would be based on fundamentals, not on persistent uncertainty. And if one adjusts cash flow discount rates to take into account these extreme uncertainties, models become very, very sensitive to changes in perception. And these perceptions, given the lack of investor confidence in the information they're receiving, are changing literally by the minute. This is no way to run an organized, orderly market. Things have got to change, and corporate managements and their Boards hold the keys. Nike Roshe Run Women Black Solar Red,Christmas movies are a time honored tradition that teach you important lessons about the value of family, illustrate the necessity of charity, and warm your heart with the goodness of your fellow man. And Die Hard is the best one ever made. Hey, listen: It still counts as "heart warming" if it rips your heart out of your chest and lights it on fire. The following are but a few of the many ways that Die Hard so perfectly represents the Christmas spirit, it makes It's a Wonderful Life look like a brutal Nativity themed snuff film by comparison. 5. The Spirit of Giving Giving and charity are the central points of the holiday, and many Christmas movies reflect that: In A Christmas Story, all Ralphie wants is a Red Ryder BB Gun. He is consumed by this desire, despite the inherent dangers of the gift, because he is only thinking of himself. Eventually his wish is granted, but it quickly turns on him, thus illustrating that selfishness is not the true meaning of the holiday. Behold, the rotten face of avarice! Similarly, in Die Hard, all that our protagonist, John McClane, wants is a peaceful holiday with his estranged wife; he too is only thinking of himself. But, unlike the selfish Hans Gruber who only wants to take, McClane eventually learns that giving is its own reward. in that he bakes a lovely bullet casserole for every god damn foreigner he sees. He becomes so charitable that, by the end of the film, he even presumably gives it hard and fast to his ex wife in the back of the limo, despite her most closely resembling an orangutan with a jerry curl. By the end of the film, Stewart finds that his life really does have meaning and importance by virtue of his worth to the community around him. Though he faces some personal trials, Stewart realizes that it's the intangible things love, friendship, and faith which are truly important. Pictured: The heart warming aftermath of attempted suicide In Die Hard, John McClane faces his own trials by virtue of his fear of flying. A nearby passenger with a dim grasp on foot anatomy advises McClane to toss away his shoes in favor of 'making fists with his toes' as an antidote to the fear, and he reluctantly takes the man's advice. Both It's A Wonderful Life and Die Hard espouse the same philosophy, that you shouldn't take things yourself, your value to the community, shoes for granted, it's just that Die Hard does it in a much more effective way: With extravagant torture! A Charlie Brown Christmas doesn't teach Charlie Brown the meaning of the holiday by putting lit cigarettes out on his face until he learns to appreciate warmth, Rudolph the Red nosed Reindeer doesn't that learn that everybody is special in their own right by being thrown into Auschwitz, and The Santa Clause doesn't teach Tim Allen that he should've loved his son more by skinning him alive and covering him in ants. "Some people don't even have a warm home at night, Charlie Brown! I'LL CUT YOUR FUCKING FACE UNTIL YOU UNDERSTAND!" Die Hard is simply willing to go much further willing to violently ream its characters in every orifice of their soul, if necessary just to impart the true meaning of Christmas.3. The Importance of Family All notions of giving and receiving aside, many movies hold that the real purpose of Christmas is to emphasize togetherness and family. We are here to appreciate our loved ones and bask in the glory of community, they say, regardless of our material possessions. The Grinch Who Stole Christmas learns this lesson when, after stealing all the presents in Whoville, still finds the Whos singing actually singing! and just grateful to be together on this holy day. Through the adversity of others, the Grinch learns family is most important, and his heart grows three sizes that day. at which point he immediately drops dead from an over enlarged heart. I don't know why everybody gives him so much shit. His grouchiness was a medical condition! In Die Hard, the giant blonde terrorist, Karl, learns that all the untraceable bearer bonds in the world are not nearly as important as his dear brother. Unfortunately, he learns this after John McClane casually murders his sibling in the face until dead. Karl is so overcome by vengeance and grief at this realization that he abandons all thoughts of self preservation and dies futilely trying to kill Bruce Willis. He was so torn apart by the loss of his family that he wasn't thinking logically, and was killed much easier. So you see, John McClane also knows family is the most important thing; that's why he makes sure to take them out first. Giant, Blonde, Dead Karl: A man that valued family above all else. 2. All Glory Be To Christ Christmas is, by and large, a celebration of the birth of Jesus. It is a day to give all acknowledgement and glory to the lord. Bruce Willis screams "Jesus fuckin' Christ!" like eighty times in Die Hard. That counts. Mark that shit.1. Faith And Miracles Which brings us to the final theme of the holidays: Faith. Whether that faith is in Our Lord and Fuckin' Savior, Jesus F. Christ, the goodness of human nature, or even just the existence of Santa Claus belief in a greater force is an integral part of the Christmas experience. For example, in Miracle on 34th Street, Susan Walker learns that Santa Claus is real, because her unwavering belief in him makes him so. "Now I have a Machine Gun. Ho Ho Ho" Die Hard, likewise, is absolutely riddled with Christmas Miracles: Hans Gruber has absolute faith that the FBI will cut the electricity to Nakatomi Plazaandthey do it right on schedule, Argyle has faith that he'll be the first jive talkin' black sidekick in cinematic history not to die a horrible, disposable death, and he is (controversially) still alive as the credits roll, while John McClane regularly demonstrates remarkable faith that the laws of physics will temporarily suspend themselves every time he calls somebody a motherfucker, and he pulls off so many reality bending shenanigans I'm almost certain he was using hacks. Unlike other, slightly less terrorist based Christmas movies, however, in Die Hard having faith let's you bungee jump through explosions on a fire hose, hurl office chairs that detonate with the force of an atomic bomb, and hang Germans with lengths of industrial chain. Unless there's a deleted scene in Miracle where Susan Walker parachutes through an inferno on the American Flag, DieHard's faith makes all other faiths look like pussies. Pictured: The most moving example of personal faith you will ever see. So when it comes time to choose that Christmas classic for the family to gather 'round this year, take your lessons from John McClane and make it Die Hard. If you run into any resistance, simply strip down to a tank top, accuse everybody present of copulating with their mothers, and shoot somebody two dozen times in the groin. Bruce Willis has done it in literally every movie he's been in, and look at him! He grew up to be Bruce Willis! You can pre order Robert's book, on Amazon, or find him on Twitter, Facebook and his own site, I Fight Robots, or you can come out to the coast, we'll get together, have a few laughs!

Nike Roshe Run Women Black Solar Red After visiting Cannes earlier this year, Chloe Robichaud's debut feature courted English language audiences at the Toronto International Film Festival and from there it was announced it was one of two Canadian films invited to the Baja International Film Festival. Its francophone star Sophie Desmarais says she's grateful for the attention the film is earning, admitting she expects her first leading role will open doors. But without money to fund the move, she agrees to marry her friend, Antoine, played by Jean Sebastien Courchesne, in a bid to get lucrative school grants and loans. The Toronto International Film Festival wraps Sunday. Desmarais says she needed to transform her body to convincingly play an athlete. She gained 10 pounds of muscle through pilates and running drills and then set about putting a unique stamp on Sarah's rigid stride. "Everything is in her gaze and in her heart," she says of the 20 year old's reserved personality, which extends to a ramrod straight posture. The 27 year old Desmarais, who also appeared at TIFF on behalf of Sebastien Pilote's "Le Demantelement," says she relished the chance to flesh out a mysterious character. Very little of Sarah's inner life is revealed through dialogue, leaving Desmarais to convey as much as she could through facial expressions and other physical movements. "She's full of determination and inner force but at the same time she's anxious, she's shy and she's afraid to meet new friends, to be in a new place," she says. "Sarah doesn't have this ability to adapt easily so I was really touched by this because she has a great passion for running, she's a good athlete but she doesn't have the charisma and the words to speak about this."
