Liberation from the power grid, freedom from utility bills, and self sufficient satisfaction that comes from generating all you need sure sounds great, but it isn't a slam dunk; turns out you gotta really want it. And, considering the setup of most conventional homes, it can require tens of thousands of dollars of investment: In solar panels, solar hot water equipment, geothermal or ground source heating and cooling, and the list goes on. Happily, if going completely off the grid isn't in the cards for you just yet, you can still reduce your environmental impact in a big way by emulating the off grid lifestyle. Here are six impactful things you can do. Invest in energy efficiency Successful off grid life is all about energy efficiency. After all, one dollar worth of energy conservation can save three to five dollars in energy generation equipment costs, so the best investments you can make are in efficiency. Step one: Figuring out where all your energy use goes. By measuring your energy use, both by individual appliance with something like a Kill a Watt and in your entire house, you can figure out what needs upgrading, updating,or replacing. Reduce your fossil fuel consumption Once you have your consumption nailed down, reducing the amount of non renewable dead dinosaurs you use for day to day activities comes next. While the phrase 'fossil fuel' tends to conjure images of cars burning gas first, when it comes to your home, electricity, natural gas, and other energy sources like heating oil or propane all can have a fossil fuel footprint. Electricity is probably the easiest of the bunch to cancel out more on that in a sec but fossil free alternatives for gas aren't as widespread just yet. So instead of relying on utilities to do it, you can just do it yourself. Build a passive solar water heater, learn to maximize daylighting and passive solar heat, and you're well on your way to cutting back on the fossil fuels you need to use in your home. Buy in to alternative energy If you can't go off the grid, you can at least buy green energy that comes from the same renewable sources that you'd be using to power your off grid abode. Many utilities (with more starting every day, it seems) offer green energy programs; for a small premium usually around 10 percent you can help them invest in solar, wind, and other alternatives to coal, and they send you some of that green energy back. And the best news: It's way cheaper than going off grid, and has a huge green impact up to half of your carbon footprint can come from home energy use. Replace grid energy with mechanical energy Crank power, dynamos, and kinetic energy can do a lot of the work that you ordinarily rely on the grid for. Everything from consumer electronics to blenders don't need the grid to go, so unplug and put your muscle power to use. Cook with minimal energy The kitchen can be one of the more energy intensive rooms in the house, so emulating off grid life means cutting back on the energy you use to cook. This means doing things like cooking pasta with less water, and without pre heating or pre boiling water. You can also eschew traditional cooking methods and appliances and turn to off grid technologies, like solar cooking here's how to make one of your own from a car shade. Take a baby step toward off grid Just because you can't completely cut the wire from the grid doesn't mean you can't get started with a smaller amount of home generated electricity. An investment of under $300 will get you started with solar power; for a little more, you can take one room in your house off grid, and for a bit more than that say, $600 you can generate enough juice to run a 20 inch tv for 20 hours, a portable stereo for 100 hours, a laptop computer for 40 hours, or a 12 watt compact fluorescent light bulb for 80 hours. Every little bit helps..

A West Scranton woman who turned herself in to police the morning after hitting a pedestrian with her car on Luzerne Street was charged Friday. Amanda Strickland, 21, 355 N. Tuesday that the man flew over her vehicle before landing unconscious in the street, witnesses told police, according to a criminal complaint. Mr. Cherry suffered a hairline fracture to his left eye socket, a cut to his face and scrapes on other parts of his body in the crash, which left him unconscious and bleeding on Luzerne Street as Ms. Strickland sped off, according to the complaint. After Ms. Strickland gave officers her car keys to take the vehicle in for evidence, officers discovered damage on the car's front end and passenger side of the windshield, along with what appeared to be blood, the complaint said. Scranton police Capt. Carl Graziano said Ms. Strickland will be charged by summons with accidents involving death or personal injury, duty to give information and render aid and required financial responsibility. Ms. Strickland's insurance policy had been canceled before Tuesday's crash, according to the complaint. 136001 141 Nike Air Jordan 12 XII Retro White French Blue ,312255 061 Nike Air Jordan 4 IV Retro 1999 Black Cement Grey 528895 023 Women Size Air Jordan 11 Retro Low Infrared 23 344613 061 Air Jordan 1 Retro High Black Max Orange White 308497 110 Air Jordan 4 Fire Red Retro 2012 Nike Kobe 9 Low EM Fluorescent Green 315297 062 Nike Air Jordan 3 III Retro Silver Sport Red Light Graphite Orange Peel 136027 189 Air Jordan V Laney White Varsity Maize Varsity Royal Black 315297 062 Nike Air Jordan 3 III Retro Silver Sport Red Light Graphite Orange Peel 136060 111 Cheap Air Jordan 1 Retro 2001 White White Midnight Navy Back to Main MenuCelebrationsFraud PreventionManage Your AdPlace an AdScottsdale, Ariz. Carlos Baerga, bench coach for Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic, looked at Mike Aviles in the Indians' locker room Thursday morning and told reporters, "I really like this guy as a player."Aviles helped Puerto Rico reach the WBC final Tuesday in San Francisco, where it lost to the Dominican Republic."It was one of the best experiences of my baseball career," said Aviles, who started at shortstop and hit .323 (10 for 31) with one homer and nine RBI. "I don't think a lot of people thought we'd get out of the first round, but we had a chance to show everybody that you don't need all the big stars on one team to go all the way."Aviles wasn't born in Puerto Rico, but his parents were. Baseball has been on the wane in the homeland of Roberto Clemente and Aviles hopes Puerto Rico's success in the WBC will invigorate it."In Puerto Rico, a lot of kids are going to different sports," said Aviles. "Hopefully, this pushes them back toward baseball. There's a lot of good ballplayers that come off that island. Sometimes you just have to reinforce that."Another treat for Aviles was playing against Indians teammates Vinnie Pestano and Carlos Santana. Aviles had two hits against Pestano and helped eliminate him and Team USA. Santana and the rest of the Dominican Republic did the same to Puerto Rico."The hits off Vinnie were for bragging rights," said Aviles with a laugh. "Vinnie told me I was 0 for 6 or 0 for 7 against him before the WBC. Well now, I'm two for my last two."I love Carlos. I'd talk to him before every game and wish him luck before I stepped into the batter's box. At the end of the day, we're all still teammates."Manager Terry Francona said Aviles and Santana would be in the starting lineup tonight against Arizona at Goodyear Ballpark.Sore elbow: Second baseman Jason Kipnis has been sidelined for the past two games with a sore right elbow."He'd play if this was the regular season," said Francona. "Right now, it's silly to run him out there."It has been a quiet spring for Kipnis, who is hitting .154 (6 for 39) with one double, one homer and three RBI.Almost there: Brett Myers didn't know his complete line score from his six inning performance against Cincinnati's Class AAA club Wednesday. What he did know is that he went six innings and didn't walk a batter.Myers, who struck out eight, is making the conversion from reliever to starter. He said his arm strength is almost where it needs to be to open the season."I've got a couple more before we get out of there," said Myers, "so I should be ready."Tough day: Left hander Scott Barnes, who had a good spring, was optioned to Class AAA Columbus on Thursday. He did not take the news well.In situations like that, experience has taught Francona not to go into detail about the reasons a player is being sent down. 136001 141 Nike Air Jordan 12 XII Retro White French Blue,Michael Vick is back with Nike two years after the company severed ties over the quarterback's involvement in a dogfighting ring. "Mike has a long standing, great relationship with Nike, and he looks forward to continuing that relationship," his agent, Joel Segal, said Wednesday. The deal was announced during a panel discussion at the Sports Sponsorship Symposium by Michael Principe, the managing director of BEST, the agency that represents Vick. The endorsement is the latest step forward for Vick as he seeks to rehabilitate his career and his image after serving 18 months in federal prison. On Sunday, Vick played his first regular season game since December 2006. "It is quite evident that athletes that run afoul of the law are by no means relegated to obscurity when it comes to pitching products," said David Carter, a professor of sports marketing at the University of Southern California. Vick signed with the Philadelphia Eagles on Aug. 13. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell gave him his full reinstatement Sept. 3, saying he could return to the field in Week 3. Vick participated in 11 plays, accounting for 30 total yards, in the Eagles' 34 14 win over the Kansas City Chiefs, as Philadelphia tries to use him in a variety of ways as a backup. Nike, which signed Vick as a rookie in 2001, terminated his contract in August 2007 after the Atlanta Falcons star filed a plea agreement admitting his involvement in the dogfighting ring. At the time, Nike called cruelty to animals "inhumane, abhorrent and unacceptable" and halted release of his fifth signature shoe, the Air Zoom Vick V. Back when Vick first signed with the Eagles, Carter had said he was "too toxic for most companies to even consider taking a chance on him." What's changed? As Carter noted Wednesday, there has been little backlash to the quarterback's return to the NFL. Protests have been limited, and the Eagles' sponsors have stood by them. That experience could make companies less wary about adding Vick as an endorser, though the biggest determinant might be no different from any other athlete: how well he performs on the field. Retailer Dick's Sporting Goods said earlier this month that it wasn't carrying Vick's Eagles jersey in any of its 300 stores as a business decision. But Paul Swangard, managing director of the Warsaw Sports Marketing Center at University of Oregon, isn't surprised that Nike re established its relationship with Vick. "Nike has a history of supporting athletes. I think they are supporting an athlete who still garners attention," Swangard said. "This is about Michael Vick as the athlete not Michael Vick the prisoner. . When he is inside the lines of the field he is an exciting football player and that's what a brand like Nike can tap into." Vick signed a $1.6 million deal with the Eagles, with a team option for the second year at $5.2 million. He was once a corporate star holding multimillion dollar deals to market everything from sneakers to sports drinks. But those millions are long gone. In July, Vick filed for bankruptcy protection while serving his sentence, saying he owed between $10 million and $50 million to creditors. To Carter, Nike likely made a calculated business decision that the benefit of sales tied to Vick outweighed any potential public outrage. Vick must still have some selling power if the company is getting behind him, he said. "Nobody understands their consumer and has their finger on the pulse of their consumer like Nike does."

Cornerbacks coach Chip West helps London recruit the area. West said the first group of players who picked the Wahoos are able to report back to their friends on what's happening. "They can truthfully say how they're being treated and how they're being coached, how they're being mentored," West said. "I think it's a great thing." Mizzell had one of those connections in Demetrious Nicholson, a Bayside graduate who is starting at cornerback for the Cavs. But Nicholson said he didn't pressure his friend. "I don't like pressuring people, you know, 'Come here, come here,' because I didn't like people doing that to me when I was trying to pick my school," Nicholson said. "I told him I hope he does come here, but wherever he goes, I'm not going to have any hard feelings towards him." Getting five stars from a recruiting service is, of course, not a guaranteed ticket to success. Virginia's last five star running back was Michael Johnson of Newport News, who never broke through in the ACC. Monroe, on the other hand, became a first round NFL draft pick and is still playing on the Jacksonville Jaguars' offensive line. The five star rating is rare, but this is a strong year in the state. Hermitage running back Derrick Green also has received five stars. Green has not made a college decision. Mizzell stands 5 foot 10, 185 pounds and was invited to a number of top camps this summer, including one run by Nike. A sprained ankle hampered his effectiveness last season. Even so, he rushed for 1,098 yards and 23 touchdowns. Before practice last week, London said one advantage of recruiting players from the same region is they are already familiar with each other when they arrive. metro area and Tidewater as two locales that have been productive for the 'Hoos. "All those guys travel in the same circles, and know each other from being in the same little league programs," London said.
